Tipp City Fire Department brought a fire truck for the children to see. During the next weeks the children had a chance to dress up like firefighters and act out some of the situations they learned about. This is an example of multisensory learning which is incorporated in Main Street Preschool’s curriculum.

Main Street Preschool opened its doors the day after Labor Day. With the beautiful late summer weather, the children spent time in the outdoor classroom, the Play Garden.  Lots of learning and playing happens there.  It’s an ideal space to work on motor skills—large and small.  And the added benefit is lots of sunshine and fresh air.

“Developmentally appropriate education for preschoolers involves using all the senses, but especially the main four: moving (kinesthetic), touching (tactile), seeing (visual) and listening (auditory). A Chinese proverb sums up what many of us know: Tell me and I’ll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I’ll understand. This is especially true for young children. They learn by doing and exploring and testing theories—in other words, playing. Playing and exploring involves using many senses at the same time,” according to teacher Lori Jans. During a week or two in the 3-year-old class, the Hikers learn about bears. They found a “cave” in the classroom full of stuffed bears! The teacher read Bear Snores On during the meeting time. This sweet book tells the story of a hibernating bear whose cave becomes a warm gathering place for other forest animals. The children were able to bring the book to life by using the cave as a stage to reenact the story. They enjoyed retelling the story with their snack of animal crackers and ice cream cone caves.

Pastor Dan explained “The Great 2015 Christmas Challenge.” We will partner with the church to bring in 10,000 pounds of foods until Christmas Eve to be donated to Needy Basket of Southern Miami Co in Tipp City. Since 2007, Main Street Preschool has donated jars of jelly and other food items to Needy Basket as a service project. Some of the teachers continued a discussion about food. The children learned the song “Aikendrum” about the man who lives in the moon and plays upon a ladle. Each part of his body is made of food. The students discovered whether each piece of food came from an animal or grew on a plant.

The public is invited to come to Tipp City United Methodist Church Great Hall this Wednesday, April 27, to view works of the student-artists.  The exhibit is open from 5 pm until 7 pm.  During the exhibit a spaghetti & meatball meal–to include chicken nuggets too–will be served between 5-6:30 p.m.  Carryout is available.  Family $15 or single $5.  Raffle packages filled with gift cards and specialty items will be on display to view and purchase tickets during the dinner also.

The staff at Main Street Preschool in downtown Tipp City believes that art enhances the lives of children.  Through art, children expand their decision-making, inventiveness, cultural awareness, and academic performance. As student-artists, they learn self-control and progressive thinking that will benefit them well for life.

Tipp City United Methodist Church is located at the corner of 3d & Main Streets.  The facility is handicap accessible.  The student-artists are anxious to show their talent to their families and the public.

“…learning takes place when children are engaged and enjoying themselves.” (Hirsh-Pasek & Golinkoff, 2003)
Since frost was coming soon, the children harvested all the pumpkins and gourds in the Play Garden. The soft, rotten ones went into a box. Leaves from the ground were added and the box was set in the corner of the garden. Mrs. Jans asked, “Do you think this box of gourds and leaves will turn into dirt?” Each child made a prediction on our magnetic board. Later, in the classroom, they read a book on compost; Mrs. Jans asked the question again. Some decided to change their answers after reading the book. They will check the box over the next months to see what happens.

In the Studio the children had a chance to play with the worms in the worm composting bin. They had put in apple pieces a few weeks earlier. They noticed the worms were eating the apples.

firefighterFirefighters visited in September to show the children the fire truck and their turn-out gear.  They climbed into the cab to look around and sprayed the fire hose.  The teachers used the week to talk about stop-drop-roll, smoke detectors and the importance of fire drills in their homes.

The multi-age class of Main Street Preschool was thrilled to meet with one of the church members soon after school began in September.  She showed them how she transforms gourds into works of art.  The preschool’s Play Garden produces gourds each year which the children pick and display in the classrooms.  Visit www.mainstreetpreschool.com for more information about other classes and activities.
